Vol. 420 No. 3

Ceisteanna-Questions. Oral Answers. - Appointment of Law Reform Commission President.

Alan Shatter

Question:

1 Mr. Shatter asked the Taoiseach when it is intended to appoint a new president of the Law Reform Commission.

The Government will appoint a new president of the Law Reform Commission as soon as may be, in compliance with the requirements of the Law Reform Commission Act, 1975.

Will the Taoiseach agree it is a matter of extreme urgency that a president of the Law Reform Commission is appointed due to the extraordinary amount of work within the commission and the number of reports expected by the Government? Will he also agree that the Government's lethargy in appointing a president to the commission is delaying this work?

I do not accept that it is delaying the work of the Law Reform Commission; their work continues normally and this was the case many times in the past when there was an interim between the appointment of one Law Reform Commission president and another.

Will the Taoiseach share with Members the nature of the Government's difficulties in finding someone willing to be president of the Law Reform Commission? Will he confirm to the House that a number of members of the Judiciary have been offered the position and have turned it down?

The Government do not have any difficulties in this regard. They will make the appointment in accordance with the requirements of the Act.

Will the Taoiseach confirm to Members that a number of members of the Judiciary have been offered the position and turned it down? Will he indicate the nature of the difficulties the Government are experiencing in finding an appropriate person willing to act as president of the Law Reform Commission?

This is repetition.

We have not had a response from the Taoiseach.

The Deputy appears to be better informed than I am in this regard. We do not have any difficulties in regard to this appointment.

Will the Taoiseach make up his mind?

Ceist 2, le do thoil.
