Vol. 420 No. 3

Written Answers. - Invitation to British Royal Family.

Brendan McGahon

Question:

37 Mr. McGahon asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs if, in view of the success of recent visits by the President of Ireland to Great Britain, he will consider extending an invitation to the Royal Family to visit this country.

Michael Creed

Question:

53 Mr. Creed asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs whether it is the Government's intention to issue an invitation to the British Royal Family for an official visit to this country.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 37 and 53 together.

As the Deputy will be aware, two members of the British Royal Family have made private visits to his country in recent times to attend sporting occasions.

In accordance with international practice any question of an official visit by a Head of State in either direction, or an official visit by a member of the family of a Head of State, would be a matter for mutual agreement between the Governments concerned. It would be inapproprate to comment in advance on the possibility of any such visit.
