Vol. 420 No. 3

Written Answers. - Persons with Autism.

Séamus Cullimore

Question:

118 Mr. Cullimore asked the Minister for Health if he intends to introduce any programmes or schemes which would improve the lives of those living with Autism.

There are a number of initiatives underway at present which when completed will help to improve the lives of persons with autism.

The Eastern and Western Health Boards, in conjunction with the Irish Society for Autism are currently carrying out surveys on the extent of autism in their respective regions which will help to identify the needs of that population. The Department's mental handicap adviser has also been asked to examine the present services available to persons with autism and to make recommendations which will enhance those services.

A major development for persons with autism is planned on a site made available by the Daughters of Charity, St. Vincent's Hospital, Fairview, Dublin 3. This will involve the provision of a workshop for 30 trainees and two houses providing 6 residential places. It is expected that construction will commence before the end of this year.
Improvements in the specialist assessment of autistic children are also being facilitated as a result of developments in the child psychiatric services.
