Vol. 420 No. 6

Written Answers. - Neurosurgical Treatment for Patient.

Eric J. Byrne

Question:

126 Mr. Byrne asked the Minister for Health if he can explain the sequence of events which has lead to the loss of the file belonging to a person (details supplied) in Dublin 12 who is a patient at Beaumont Hospital; and if he can assure this person that she will not have to wait another year for neurosurgery due to the events taking place at Beaumont Neurosurgery Department.

I have received a report from Beaumont Hospital concerned the patient in question.

I understand from the hospital that the patient's medical records were requested from the hospital by a Consultant Neurosurgeon at his private rooms. These records were sent to the private rooms on 7 October 1991 but were not returned to Beaumont Hospital.

Beaumont Hospital has informed me, however, that the patient was seen as an out-patient at the hospital by another Consultant Neurosurgeon on 21 May 1992 and that, since then, this Consultant Neurosurgeon has received a copy of relevant data from the medical records from the private rooms to which they were originally sent.

The patient's priority for admission and treatment is, of course, a matter for clinical decision by the consultant concerned.
