Vol. 420 No. 7

Written Answers. - Celbridge (Kildare) Educational Requirements.

Bernard J. Durkan

Question:

70 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Education if he will outline the length of time the examination of the post primary educational requirements of Celbridge, County Kildare, has been going on in his Department; when he expects it to be completed; if a report will be published on the matter; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

My Department reviews the accommodation needs of post-primary centres periodically, particularly in respect of areas, such as Celbridge, where rapid housing development is taking place.

The reviews involve an assessment of: primary and post-primary figures and trends; existing post-primary facilities; housing and industrial developments, existing and planned; baptism figures; other related factors.

Arising from the announcement by the Holy Faith Sisters at the end of 1991 of their intention two withdraw from management of St. Wolstan's secondary school, Celbridge, my Department has been examining the options for meeting the post-primary needs of the area with a view of formulating proposals for consideration in conjunction with local education interests. It is expected that this examination will be completed shortly. While the matter will be discussed with local interests, it is not proposed to prepare and publish a formal report.
