Vol. 420 No. 9

Written Answers. - Services for Children.

Dick Spring

Question:

136 Mr. Spring asked the Minister for Health if, in light of his statement regarding the expansion of services for children, he will provide a listing of the precise operational details of the additional services to be provided, the staffing requirements, and the people to benefit from the expansion of services for children with mental handicap, and if he will publish a timetable for the implementation of this expansion.

Services for children with mental handicap are an integral part of the overall services provided by both voluntary and statutory agencies to people with mental handicap. Children will therefore benefit from the additional residential, respite, day and home support services which are being provided this year.

Services which cater specifically for children will be expanded by the provision of 3 extra early intervention teams and 55 places in child education and development centres. These additional services will be provided in the following health board areas.

Child Education and Development Centres

The precise operational details of the additional services to be provided, the staffing requirements and the people to benefit have been agreed by the Mental Handicap Co-Ordinating Committees in each health board area. The service providing agencies are currently in the process of supplying to my Department the type of detailed information regarding staffing requirements and commencement dates requested by the Deputy. I will make the information available to the Deputy when it has been received from all the agencies involved.
