67 Mr. J. Bruton and Mr. J. Mitchell asked the Minister for Finance if he has considered a tax on plastic bags, similar to that introduced in Italy, to discourage their use on environmental grounds; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The scope for introduction of new taxes on products has been severely curtailed by EC Single Market considerations. Given these requirements and other practical considerations, I have no plans for a selective tax on plastic bags.
