Vol. 421 No. 1

Written Answers. - County Galway Roads.

Michael P. Kitt

Question:

55 Mr. M. Kitt asked the Minister for the Environment if he will outline the steps that have been taken by his Department's inspectors and by Galway County Council to make safe the approach roads to Kilrickle village, Loughrea, County Galway; if his officials have contacted the local garda on this matter; if his attention has been drawn to the number of serious accidents at Kilrickle over the last number of years; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

My Department has agreed to a request from Galway County Council to replace standard size speed limit signs at Kilrickle with large diameter signs. The county council has been asked to report to the Department on the effectiveness of these signs.

As regards improvement works, it would be a matter for Galway County Council to develop proposals for any road improvements considered necessary at this location and to submit them for road grant financing. While no such proposals have been received, I understand that the local authority are considering the possibility of providing hard shoulders which should assist in reducing the number of accidents.
