Written Answers. - Prison Detention Capacity.

Question:

40 Mr. Deasy asked the Minister for Justice the total capacity of our prison detention system for (i) males (ii) females (iii) juvenile males and (iv) juvenile females. The number of juveniles - i.e. those of under 17 years - in such custody is 52, all of whom are male.

The average daily number of persons in custody at present in our prison system is about 2,200 of which about 45 are females. The number of juveniles — i.e. those of under 17 years — in such custody is 52, all of whom are male.
