Vol. 421 No. 2

Written Answers. - Crime Prevention Funding.

Bernard J. Durkan

Question:

54 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Justice if he has satisfied himself that sufficient resources are available to combat crime with particular reference to the fight against drugs and organised crime; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I have conferred personally with the Garda authorities about their views on their current resources situation. They have confirmed to me that they have the resources necessary to combat crime, particularly drug related and organised crime. Legislation to strengthen the hands of the gardaí in combating crime by way of confiscation of the proceeds of crime, and of drug trafficking in particular, is at an advanced stage of preparation in my Department.
