Question:

103 Mr. Bradford asked the Minister for Education the reason for the undue delay in notifying the 1992 leaving certificate and junior certificate examination correctors of their positions.

Question:

104 Mr. Bradford asked the Minister for Education if he will outline the qualification criteria used to select junior certificate and leaving certificate examination correctors; and if he will further outline whether (a) unemployed teachers and (b) substitute and part-time teachers get preference for these positions.

I propose taking Questions Nos. 102 to 104, inclusive, together. My Department appoints its junior and leaving certificate examiners on the basis of their suitability and previous experience. Unemployed, substitute or part time teachers do not get preference for these positions.

There was no undue delay in notifying examiners this year. Letters of appointment were issued by the Department on 15 May this year by comparison with the 17 May in 1991.

The total number of examiners appointed in 1992 is 1,366 in the leaving certificate and 1,666 in the junior certificate.
