Vol. 421 No. 4

Written Answers. - Excise Duties on Car Hire Fleets.

John V. Farrelly

Question:

91 Mr. Farrelly asked the Minister for Finance if he will outline the full costs to the State for all excise duties on the fleet cars purchased in any one year; if he will give details of the number of cars purchased by the fleet for the tourist industry in any one year; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

It is understood that the Deputy's question relates to the amount of excise duty accruing to the State in respect of purchases of cars used for short term hire in the tourist industry. I regret that this information is not available as records are not maintained in such a manner as would enable the required information to be provided. The Minister for Tourism, Transport and Communications has advised me that the total car hire fleet is currently estimated to range from 12,000 to 13,000 cars. However, there are no statistics available on annual purchases of cars by this sector.
