Vol. 421 No. 5

Written Answers. - Therapeutic Pregnancy Terminations.

John Connor

Question:

51 Mr. Connor asked the Minister for Health if he will give details of the numbers of therapeutic termination of pregnancies to save the mother's life which were performed in all hospitals in the State in each of the years between 1988 to 1991.

Current obstetric practice in Ireland is that operations and treatments necessary for the management of certain serious pathological conditions of the mother, e.g. ectopic pregnancy, cancer of the genital tract, may be performed even though the death of the foetus may result. The number of these procedures carried out in Irish hospitals between 1988 and 1992 is not available.
