Vol. 421 No. 8

Written Answers. - Smoking in Workplaces.

Theresa Ahearn

Question:

151 Mrs. T. Ahearn asked the Minister for Health if it is his intention to introduce legislation prohibiting smoking in all workplaces in the interests of health and the right of workers to a clean working environment; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

As part of the progressive development of an integrated programme to control smoking, my predecessor established last year a Consultative Committee on Smoking in the Workplace. The committee has recently submitted a report to me which sets out specific recommendations in relation to the control of smoking in the workplace. I am at present examining the report with a view to addressing the issue of smoking in the workplace. As soon as my examination is complete I will make a statement on the matter including the necessary measures to address the issues raised by the Deputy.
