Vol. 421 No. 8

Written Answers. - Rehabilitation Unit.

Gerry O'Sullivan

Question:

178 Mr. G. O'Sullivan asked the Minister for Health if, in view of the substantial number of patients from the Southern Health Board area and the Munster area in general who are obliged to receive treatment in Our Lady's Hospital, Dún Laoghaire, County Dublin, he has any plans to provide a comparable unit in County Cork.

Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital, Dún Laoghaire is the national centre for rehabilitation in this country. In 1991 the number of patients from the Munster area attending Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital was 294 which represented about 27 per cent of the total discharges from the hospital. A highly specialised rehabilitation centre in the Munster area would not be viable with this level of activity.
