Vol. 421 No. 8

Written Answers. - Local Authority Funding.

Ivan Yates

Question:

188 Mr. Yates asked the Minister for the Environment if he will confirm that his Department have received a request for funding for four county council houses to provide them with water and sanitary services by Wexford County Council; if money will be forthcoming this year for this purpose; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Local authorities are responsible for the management, maintenance and improvement of their rented dwellings, including the provision of necessary facilities. The £2 million provided this year under the bathrooms' sub-programme is intended to supplement authorities' expenditure from their own resources and assist them to eliminate this deficiency in their housing stock. The funds available under the sub-programme have been allocated in full to those authorities which have a comparatively high number of dwellings without bathroom facilities and there are no further funds available for allocation at this stage. However, the application in question, which was received in February last, will be considered in the context of any future funding available for this purpose.
