Vol. 421 No. 8

Written Answers. - County Limerick Speed Limits.

Michael Noonan

Question:

195 Mr. Noonan (Limerick East) asked the Minister for the Environment the reason a section of road (details supplied) in County Limerick was not included in the recent speed limit extensions in County Limerick as submitted by Limerick County Council in March 1991.

The application of low speed limits on sections of national roads, where these are not warranted in the interest of road safety, can lead to pressure for development along these sections of road, thereby reducing their traffic carrying capacity and their effectiveness as national routes. It was for this reason that, following consideration of the speed limit proposals presented by Limerick County Council and Limerick Corporation for the city and county generally, I decided not to approve the proposal to apply a 40 mph limit on national road N69 at Kilcorman.
