Vol. 421 No. 8

Written Answers. - Employment of Married Women.

Andrew Boylan

Question:

251 Mr. Boylan asked the Minister for Labour when a decision is expected from the Labour Court in the case of married women who left full-time employment in the Civil Service before 1973 and who have since been denied their positions back; if his attention has been drawn to the long delay in having this case concluded and the undue hardship being caused; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

This case is on appeal to the Labour Court against two recommendations made by an equality officer on 31 October 1991.

The Employment Equality Act, 1977 allows parties to a recommendation to appeal to the Labour Court not later than 42 days from the date of the recommendation. Because of the complex issues involved in the case considerable notice of the hearing date was given to facilitate the parties concerned in preparing their submissions. The appeal is scheduled to be heard by the court on 7 July 1992.
