Vol. 421 No. 8

Written Answers. - Meath Groundwater Resources.

John Bruton

Question:

85 Mr. J. Bruton asked the Minister for Energy if the Geological Survey Office have yet commenced their survey of groundwater supplies in County Meath in order to identify all underground water resources in the county; and if he will advise on their protection from pollution.

The Geological Survey of Ireland have been approached in recent weeks by Meath County Council with the view to preparing a policy to protect the groundwater resources of the county. No surveying has commenced to date.

The groundwater section of the Geological Survey are currently in consultation with Meath County Council and are discussing different options which would enable a groundwater protection scheme to be prepared. As part of the process of preparing such a scheme the areas with major groundwater resources would be identified. In addition, groundwater resources which are considered vulnerable to pollution would be recognised and recommendations made to protect their quality.
