Dáil Éireann debate -

Vol. 422 No. 2

Order of Business.

It is proposed to take No. 23, Vote 40. It is also proposed that at the conclusion of business today, the Dáil shall adjourn until 12 noon on Tuesday, 7 July 1992.

May I take it that that is satisfactory and agreed? Agreed.

May I ask the Taoiseach if the Government have made any decision on when the Dáil shall resume after the summer break and, second, on the timescale for legislation and a referendum to deal with the right to travel and information and the substantive issue of abortion?

The date the Dáil will resume will be announced at the appropriate time. The timetable outlined in the statement of the four party leaders will be adhered to.

I would like to draw attention to the schedule of business for next week. It is proposed that the guillotine will be applied on Bills and my party will not support the use of the guillotine. It is nonsensical that this House should attempt to drive through legislation in this way simply because we want to conclude at 4.30 p.m. next Friday.

May I respectively suggest that Members might await the submission of these matters next week and make their protest at that stage, if necessary?

May I ask the Taoiseach if the Government have taken any action to try to retain the jobs that are being lost at Ballyfermot and Belmullet in Babygro——

I am sorry but the Deputy must know quite clearly that that is not a matter for the Order of Business.

There is no other facililty available on a Friday.

Doubtless the Deputy will find another way of raising that matter; there are so many ways open to him to do so.

There is no other way open to me on a Friday to raise it.
