Vol. 423 No. 6

Written Answers. - Shannon Stop Policy.

Ivor Callely

Question:

81 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Tourism, Transport and Communications if her attention has been drawn to the fact that all senior tourist promoters agree and recognise that the absence of direct trans-atlantic flights to Dublin is creating difficulties in promoting Ireland, and, in particular, Dublin as a tourist attraction; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

I have received a large number of representations from all the main interests involved on the Shannon stop issue, including a wide range of tourism interests. I have also had discussions with these interests.

In this context, representatives of the tourism industry have outlined to me their views on how to further expand and develop access arrangements between Ireland and North America. These views have included arguments both for and against a change in the Shannon stop policy.

I cannot therefore accept the Deputy's assertion that all senior tourist promoters agree and recognise that the absence of direct trans-atlantic flights to Dublin is creating difficulties in promoting Ireland, and, in particular, Dublin as a tourist attraction.

I am at present finalising an examination of proposals very recently made to me concerning the Shannon stop. When I have done so I will announce my decision on this issue. I would hope to do so by end October.
