Question:

159 Mrs. Fennell asked the Minister for the Environment the number of women on the boards of agencies and companies under his control at the end of 1991; the plans, if any, he has to increase the number in 1992; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The number of women serving on the boards of agencies under my control was 11 at 31 December 1991. The current number is 13. Future appointments will take full account of Government policy on the matter.

It is not expected that any vacancies will arise on the boards of these agencies before the end of 1992.
The Department of Foreign Affairs is committed on ensuring that the principles and practices of equality of opportunity are applied in all areas of its activities, including appointments made to the boards of bodies under its aegis.
