Vol. 424 No. 10

Ceisteanna — Questions. Written Answers. - Exchange Controls.

Michael Noonan

Question:

5 Mr. Noonan (Limerick East) asked the Minister for Finance if the Government intends removing all remaining exchange controls with effect from 1 January 1993; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

As the Deputy is no doubt aware, the Government have, since 1988, been implementing a phased programme for the gradual elimination of all remaining exchange controls. At this stage, the few restrictions which continue to apply relate to movements of short-term capital, principally the opening by residents of current and deposit accounts abroad. It is the Government's intention to remove these controls by the end of the year.
