Unemployed people who obtain two or three days work per week are subject to the same PRSI conditions as employees generally. Private sector employees earning £25 per week or more are covered by Class A social insurance, which gives entitlement to the full range of benefits and pensions. The social insurance contributions for Class A are 5.5 per cent for employees, and 12.2 per cent for employers. If earnings are £60 or less the employees' contributions are waived.
There is also a health contribution of 1.25 per cent and an employment and training levy of 1 per cent. These are usually paid by the employee, but if the employee is a medical card holder, they are paid by the employer instead.
