Vol. 425 No. 7

Written Answers. - Industrial Waste Disposal.

Peter Barry

Question:

262 Mr. Barry asked the Minister for the Environment if he will give details of the Government's commitment to the provision of a hazardous waste incinerator for Irish industry; the reason it has taken so long to identify a site and for work to start; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Securing the provision of a central hazardous waste incinerator for Irish industry has been a standing policy objective. Following the decision of Du Pont (U.K.) Ltd. not to proceed with their proposal for an all-Ireland incinerator, my Department has been carrying out a detailed review of the position. I intend to announce a strategy based on this review at an early date.

It has always been envisaged that an incinerator would be provided by a private sector operator who would be responsible for selecting the location subject to the necessary planning and other permissions.
