Vol. 425 No. 7

Written Answers. - Reconciliation/Peace Groups Funding.

Robert Molloy

Question:

51 Mr. Molloy asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs if in relation to groups and bodies engaged in reconcilliation and peace work in Northern Ireland, he will give the amount, if any, of State moneys given to each such group in 1992; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I commend the very valuable activities of groups and bodies engaged in reconciliation and peace work in Northern Ireland and indeed in the wider area of creating better understanding between people in both parts of Ireland and between Ireland and Britain.

A number of the organisations which is active in this field is assisted under the North-South and Anglo-Irish Co-operation subhead of the Vote for the Department of Foreign Affairs.

Due to the seriousness of the budgetary situation, the Government was obliged last year to reduce the allocation to the subhead below the level of previous years.

The following groups and bodies were grant-aided under the subhead in 1992:

£

International Fund for Ireland

55,000

Anglo-Irish Encounter

20,000

Co-operation North

20,000

Between

10,000

Irish School of Ecumenics

6,000

Northern Ireland Children's Holiday Scheme

3,400

Children's Community Holidays

600

Total

115,000

While the budgetary situation is even more difficult this year, I hope very much that our budgetary circumstances will in due course permit an increased allocation to be made to the subhead.
