Vol. 425 No. 8

Written Answers. - Areas of Scientific Interest.

Liz McManus

Question:

64 Ms McManus asked the Minister for Finance if, in relation to the survey being carried out by the Office of Public Works on areas of scientific interest, he will ensure that areas most threatened are assessed first in order to ensure their conservation for the future and that the conclusions of the survey are made public.

The present resurvey of areas of scientific interest will be carried out by a team of contractors backed up by National Parks and Wildlife Service staff. It is expected that the survey will be completed by the end of 1993. With such a tight schedule sites will not be formally prioritised but any site which is especially threatened or endangered will be dealt with at an early stage.

The conclusions of the survey will be made public, maps will be published and landowners will be notified.
