Vol. 426 No. 2

Ceisteanna-Questions. Oral Answers. - Live Register.

Theresa Ahearn

Question:

3 Mrs. T. Ahearn asked the Taoiseach the number of persons on the Live Register for each employment exchange in County Tipperary on 1 September 1991 and 1992 and 1 February 1993; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The information requested by the Deputy is contained in a statement which I propose to circulate in the Official Report.

Following is the statement:

Note: There is a discontinuity in the series because of revised statistical coverage from May 1992.

In order to highlight the drastic unemployment position will the Minister give the figures for the towns of Cahir and Carrick-on-Suir?

I am pleased to tell the Deputy that the figures dropped in the past five months by 0.3 per cent. I do not have specific figures for these towns. Up to January 1993, the figure for Cahir was 1,007.

That figure represents an unemployment percentage of 35 per cent. What does the Minister propose to do to reduce that drastic unemployment situation in Cahir?

I am anxious to facilitate the Deputy in eliciting information but she is now entering into the area of policy which requires a separate question. This is essentially a statistical question.

It is not a statistical answer.
