Question:36 Mr. M. McDowell asked the Minister for Justice whether the allocation of Garda manpower between the different divisions is a matter for herself or for the Garda Commissioner.
Written Answers. - Garda Síochána Manpower Allocation.
Section 6 (1) of the Garda Síochána Act, 1924, provides that the Garda Síochána shall be distributed and stationed throughout the State in such a manner as the Minister for Justice shall from time to time direct.
In practice the position is that all Ministers have been guided by the professional assessments of the Garda authorities as to the overall distribution of the force.
