Question:

11 Mr. R. Bruton asked the Minister for Enterprise and Employment if he will give details of the movement of net employment in the past five years in foreign companies operating in Ireland, large Irish companies and small Irish companies; the way in which this compares to the industrial grant-aid provided to these categories of companies during those five years; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Complete job survey data for 1992 is not yet available. The Deputy's question is therefore answered in respect of the five year period 1987 to 1991.

I propose to circulate two tables which illustrate the position in so far as the manufacturing and internationally traded services sectors are concerned.

Table 1 shows net employment in manufacturing and international services industry at the end of each of the years from 1987 to 1991 in respect of Foreign, Medium/large Irish and Small Irish industry.

Table 2 shows the grants paid by the State development agencies — IDA, Shannon Development and Údarás na Gaeltachta — each year 1987 to 1991 classified on the same basis as Table 1.

The information is sourced from IDA, Shannon Development and Údarás na Gaeltachta end year job surveys which are supplied by the Agencies to the Department of Enterprise and Employment Industrial Database.
