Vol. 426 No. 5

Written Answers. - County Roads.

Peadar Clohessy

Question:

174 Mr. Clohessy asked the Minister for the Environment if he will make special provisions so that county roads can be brought up to an acceptable standard after the recent heavy rains.

Responsibility for the improvement and maintenance of non-national roads rests with the local authority concerned. The cost of such works, including remedial work arising as a result of weather conditions, falls to be financed by the local authority from its own resources, supplemented by the discretionary grants provided annually by my Department. The determination of priorities in the expenditure of these funds is entirely a matter for the local authority. I hope to be in a position shortly to determine and to notify local authorities of the road grant allocations for 1993, including the discretionary grants for non-national roads.
