Vol. 426 No. 5

Written Answers. - Schools' Maintenance Responsibility.

Jimmy Deenihan

Question:

341 Mr. Deenihan asked the Minister for Education the number of primary schools maintained by the Office of Public Works, commonly referred to as Board of Works schools.

A decision was taken in 1988 to transfer to my Department responsibilities in relation to national school premises which were formerly exercised by the Office of Public Works. This included responsibility for the maintenance of nine model schools and of the balance of the schools originally vested in the Minister for Finance and in the Commissioners of National Education. The responsibility for the maintenance of some of these schools has been assumed by the local school authorities in return for full capitation grant. As of September 1992, responsibility for maintenance of 46 schools remained with my Department.
