Vol. 426 No. 6

Written Answers. - Appointment of Remedial Teacher.

Avril Doyle

Question:

149 Mrs. Doyle asked the Minister for Education the reason for the delay in appointing a remedial teacher to a school (details supplied) in County Wexford as the school has met all necessary requirements; and when the post will be filled.

Unlike ordinary class teaching posts which must be filled where the prescribed numbers of pupils have been enrolled, there is not an automatic allocation of remedial teaching posts each year.

I am currently examining the scope for deployment of additional teaching resources to children with special educational needs. The question of remedial teaching posts will form a key element in this consideration. In this connection the Programme for a Partnership Government provides for the recruitment of 500 remedial teachers by September 1996.
