Ceisteanna — Questions. Oral Answers. - Legislative Programme.

Bernard J. Durkan

Question:

1 Mr. Durkan asked the Taoiseach if he will give his priorities in respect of the Government's legislative programme; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The Government has a comprehensive legislative programme for the 27th Dáil, as set out in the Programme for a Partnership Government.

The Government agrees its legislative priorities for each session at the commencement of the session and, as the Deputy is aware, the Government Chief Whip circulated a list of the Government's proposals for this session last week.

The legislative programme is discussed by the Whips on a regular basis. From time to time matters arise which require urgent attention and while the Government, in the main, works to a planned programme, account must be taken of developments as they arise.

Will the Taoiseach elucidate further in relation to the priority rating which he proposes for the legislative programme, as the list circulated does not give any such indication?

The list published shows exactly what we hope to introduce and pursue during the present Dáil session. From time to time there may be changes to it and I am sure the Deputy is well aware of that. I have nothing further to add to the list.

There are 27 Bills on the list. Would the Taoiseach accept that not one job will result from any of the Bills on this list? Has the Taoiseach any legislative proposal that will make an impact on our horrendous unemployment figures?

The Deputy will be well satisfied when he hears later the statement from the Minister for Finance in relation to this Government's approach to job creation and the methods we are adopting to boost job creation and investment in this economy.

Does the Taoiseach envisage any other legislative measures being added to the list circulated, for example, amendments to existing legislation which the Taoiseach feels might be deemed necessary before the end of the session?

I have nothing specific in mind but I am sure the Deputy will appreciate that at times, due to events that occur during the session of the Dáil, the introduction of legislation may be required. In those circumstances of course the Government will always respond.

We will deal now with questions nominated for priority for which 20 minutes only is provided for in the Standing Orders of this House. Let us strive earnestly to dispose of the five questions before us within the time limit prescribed.
