Vol. 426 No. 6

Written Answers. - Crosshaven (Cork) Pier.

Batt O'Keeffe

Question:

21 Mr. B. O'Keeffe asked the Minister for the Marine if he will give a progress report on the extension to Crosshaven Pier, County Cork; and when this work is likely to commence.

The proposed works were included in the Department of the Marine's Fishery Harbour Development Programme 1989-93. In order to progress this project a site investigation was undertaken at Crosshaven Pier during 1992. This investigation was completed last autumn at a cost of £22,000. The results of the investigation will be used in the detailed design and cost of the proposed extension.

Due to the limited availability of financial resources and other priorities for available resources, it will not be possible to carry out the proposed development at Crosshaven during 1993.

However, the Department of the Marine is drawing up a new development programme covering the 1994 to 1997 period, for which all maritime local authorities have been invited to make proposals for harbour developments in the fisheries interest and for which they are prepared to make funds available. Cork County Council has proposed the improvement of Crosshaven Pier among their list of proposed development projects. Pending finalisation of the 1994-97 development programme and clarification of its funding, I am not in a position, at this point, to indicate when development works can be undertaken at Crosshaven. However, I am hopeful that some funds can be found for this project and I would expect to be in a position to clarify matters before the end of this year.
