Vol. 426 No. 6

Written Answers. - Defence Forces' Role in EC.

Bernard J. Durkan

Question:

53 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Defence his views on the role or function for the Defence Forces within the European Community; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

There is no defence role or function for the Defence Forces within the European Community. Given that the Maastricht Treaty does not contain a mutual defence commitment, does not require Ireland to join a military alliance and provides that the policy of the Union shall not prejudice the specific character of Ireland's security and defence policy, this position will not change when the provisions of the Treaty are implemented.

Members of the Defence Forces are involved as observers with the monitor mission to former Yugoslavia mandated by the Conference on Security and Co-operation in Europe and in a humanitarian role with the EC Task Force to that region.
