Vol. 426 No. 6

Written Answers. - Mullaghmore High Court Judgment.

Matt Brennan

Question:

73 Mr. M. Brennan asked the Minister for Finance the number of people under contract with the Office of Public Works who lost their jobs, in Mullaghmore, County Clare and elsewhere as a result of the High Court decision on 12th February, 1993.

The contractors have advised that 230 construction jobs have been lost as a result of the suspension of the contracts. The following is a summary of the position based on information supplied by the contractors.

Burren Visitor Centre — 57 jobs: On the main contract a total of 15 workmen have been laid off and the proposed recruitment of a further 15 workmen was cancelled. On the roadworks a total of nine workmen have been laid off and the recruitment of a further six has been cancelled. The mechanical and electrical subcontracts, which were about to be placed when works were suspended on site, would have employed approximately 12 persons in total.

Wicklow Mountains Visitor Centre — 87 jobs: On the main contract 29 workmen have been laid off and the recruitment of a further 26 workmen has been cancelled. The contractor estimates that the numbers employed by him on this job would rise to 70 by the end of April and reach a peak of 90 during the summer months. No figures are available in relation to the roadworks to be carried out by the local authority. The following nominated subcontracts were about to be confirmed when the works were suspended. The estimated number of jobs that would have been involved is also indicated — electrical, 8; mechanical, 8; stonework, 6 and laminated timber, 10.

Boyne Valley Visitor Centre — 86 jobs: Prior to cessation of work 50 persons were employed on site. An estimated further 36 were employed in related off-site work.

No information is available on the effects on jobs with building suppliers as a result of the suspension of work on these projects.
