Vol. 426 No. 6

Written Answers. - Grants for Emigrant Organisations.

Tony Gregory

Question:

93 Mr. Gregory asked the Minister for Enterprise and Employment if he will give details of grant assistance applied for by Emigrant Advice; and the grant-aid he will make available to this organisation in 1993.

For some years now, the grants made on the advice of DÍON, the London-based advisory committee on the welfare of emigrants in Britain, have been confined to British based organisations with one long-standing exception — Emigrant Advice, Dublin. In 1992, as an exceptional measure, a grant was made to a second Irish based agency.

However, both Emigrant Advice, Dublin, and the other agency were advised last year that the then Minister had accepted the recommendation of the DÍON Committee that the moneys available were more pressingly needed by the voluntary agencies in Britain and he did not propose providing further grant aid for voluntary agencies operating in Ireland.

DÍON will shortly be inviting applications from suitable British based bodies and will subsequently advise me on how best to allocate this year's grant of £500,000 which is at the same level as last year.
