Vol. 427 No. 3

Written Answers. - Fraud Investigation.

Desmond J. O'Malley

Question:

105 Mr. O'Malley asked the Minister for Transport, Energy and Communications if the investigation has now been completed into alleged discrepancies in rail tickets supplied to an outside agent by Irish Rail at Connolly Station, Dublin; if so, the outcome; the loss, if any, which has been sustained; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I understand that the Garda Síochána Fraud Squad investigation into this matter has recently been completed. The Director of Public Prosecutions has decided not to issue proceedings in the case.

I am informed by the Chairman of CIE that the matter involves a potential loss to Iarnród Éireann of up to £250,000. The Chairman has also informed me that he has introduced a range of new revenue and other controls and procedures which are intended to prevent the re-occurrence of any such difficulties.
