Vol. 427 No. 4

Written Answers. - County Mayo Road Flooding.

Enda Kenny

Question:

48 Mr. E. Kenny asked the Minister for the Environment the action, if any, he will take to alleviate flooding on the road at Ballincarra, Kilmaine, County Mayo, which is a cause of disruption to many people in this district and has resulted in several near fatal accidents; if he will allocate a special grant to Mayo County Council to have this work carried out; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

It would be a matter for Mayo County Council to decide on the need for, and scope of, any remedial action in this case. I understand that the council carried out certain drainage works over the winter period which brought some improvement, and that they are now monitoring the situation. Grants are not provided by my Department for drainage works of this kind. If the local authority decide to seek a remedy through the carrying out of road works, the cost involved would fall to be financed from their own resources supplemented by the annual discretionary grants for non-national roads. The grants to Mayo County Council under this heading in 1992 totalled £4.278 million. I hope shortly to be in a position to notify local authorities of the allocations for 1993.
