Vol. 427 No. 7

Written Answers. - Medical Intervention in Life Threatening Conditions.

Frances Fitzgerald

Question:

119 Ms F. Fitzgerald asked the Minister for Health if he will introduce legislation which ensures that pregnant women have the right to prompt and appropriate medical intervention, including palliative care, in the case of life-threatening conditions.

While the nature and extent of medical intervention in life-threatening conditions affecting pregnant women is primarily a matter for the clinical judgment of the patient's doctor, I am aware that the Second Commission on the Status of Women has made a recommendation that legislation should be introduced along the lines suggested by the Deputy. The Commission's recommendation on this matter will be considered in the context of legislation which I will be preparing following on the Constitutional Referenda in November last.
