Written Answers. - Ministerial Appointments.

Eamon Gilmore

Question:

172 Mr. Gilmore asked the Minister for the Environment the number of persons employed in his constituency office, his private office and those of his Minister of State; the rank of each person; and the salary paid.

The staff of my private office comprise my private secretary (a higher executive officer), three executive officers and three clerical assistants. There is the equivalent of six full-time persons comprising an executive officer, a staff officer, three clerical assistants (including two job-sharers), a personal assistant and a personal secretary serving in my constituency office. The personal assistant is paid at a rate equivalent to the tenth point of the clerical officer scale, and the personal secretary has the same salary scale as a secretarial assistant in the Houses of the Oireachtas with the additional standard allowance of £15.38 per week. A special adviser is employed separately on a contract basis at a salary of £18,730 p.a.

The staff of Minister of State John Browne's private office comprises his private secretary, who is a higher executive officer, an executive officer and a clerical assistant. There are five persons in his constituency office comprised of a staff officer, two clerical assistants, a personal assistant and a personal secretary. The personal assistant has the same salary scale as a secretarial assistant in the Houses of the Oireachtas with an additional allowance of 10 per cent, and the personal secretary is paid at the maximum of the salary scale appropriate to her civil service grade of clerical assistant. The Minister of State also has a special adviser whose salary is £28,000 p.a.
The staff of Minister of State Emmet Stagg's private office is made up of his private secretary, who is a higher executive officer, an executive officer, a clerical officer and a clerical assistant. His constituency office staff comprises two clerical assistants, a personal assistant and a personal secretary. The pay of the personal assistant, who is a former secretarial assistant in the Houses of the Oireachtas, has yet to be decided, while the personal secretary is paid £151 per week.
In all cases, the salaries of the permanent civil servants are those appropriate to their grades.
