Vol. 427 No. 8

Written Answers. - School Safety Statements.

Jimmy Deenihan

Question:

230 Mr. Deenihan asked the Minister for Education the number of schools which have prepared a safety statement as required under the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act, 1991; her views on the number of schools which are now in breach of this legislation by not having a safety statement published; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

Responsibility for the day to day operation of the school is a matter for the management authorities of each school, and the specific action required under the Act, as referred to by the Deputy, is a matter for the Board of Management of each school. Consequently, the figures requested are not available in my Department.

I would be concerned if schools were to be in breach of the 1989 Act, and in order to increase awareness of its provisions, and to standardise Safety Statements in so far as possible, my Department is in the process of drawing up a circular for issue to school authorities.
