Vol. 427 No. 8

Written Answers. - Douglas (Cork) School.

Micheál Martin

Question:

13 Mr. Martin asked the Minister for Education her views on whether the construction of a new school for Gaelscoil an Athar Tadhg Ó Murchú in Douglas, County Cork, is an urgent priority; and if funding will be provided in 1993 to enable construction to begin.

This school is at present in rented accommodation at the Presentation Brothers former residence in Douglas. My Department is aware of the need to provide new accommodation for the school as the Presentation Brothers wish to repossess the building in order to have it refurbished for their own use. My Department is at present finalising the legal formalities for the purchase of a site for a new school building and the necessary steps have been taken to initiate architectural planning. Having regard to the necessary timescale to complete architectural planning and obtain planning permission the earliest time by which tenders could be invited would be in the latter part of 1993. This is one of the projects which will be considered for inclusion in the 1994 capital programme in the light of the allocation made and other commitments and priorities.
