The Programme for a Partnership Government made specific commitment to the appointment of 500 additional remedial teachers by September 1996. As a first step towards honouring this commitment, I have decided to appoint an additional 80 remedial teachers with effect from September 1993. A decision in relation to further allocations of remedial posts subsequent to 1993 will be taken in due course.
These posts will be allocated to individual and groups of schools on the basis of priority of need, as indicated by data collected from schools. The needs of the particular schools mentioned will be considered when decisions in these matters are being taken.
