Vol. 427 No. 8

Written Answers. - Remedial Teacher.

Paul McGrath

Question:

44 Mr. McGrath asked the Minister for Education if an application for a remedial teacher has been received from Rathwire National School, County Westmeath; the reason the application was not acknowledged; if it has been processed; and when this school can expect a remedial teacher to be appointed to its staff.

My Department has no record of an application for a remedial teacher being received from the school in question.

The Programme for a Partnership Government made a specific commitment to the appointment of 500 additional remedial teachers by September 1996. As a first step towards honouring this commitment, I have decided to appoint an additional 80 remedial teachers with effect from September 1993. These posts will be allocated to individual and groups of schools on the basis of priority of need, as indicated by data collected from schools.

Should Rathwire national school wish to be considered for a remedial teacher post, they should submit an application to my Department as soon as possible giving particulars of the incidence of remedial need among pupils attending the school and indicating whether the service of a full-time or shared remedial teacher is required.
