Vol. 427 No. 8

Written Answers. - Non-Permanent Teachers.

Peter Barry

Question:

102 Mr. Barry asked the Minister for Education if she will accord priority to the needs of non-permanent teachers; if she has been in consultation with the INTO about the matter, in view of the fact that strike action has been authorised to highlight the pay and conditions for substitute teachers; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

I fully appreciate and recognise the important role of non-permanent teachers in the primary education system.

The matter raised by the Deputy was one of a number of issues that I discussed with the INTO at a recent meeting. Officials of my Department have also held a meeting with the INTO to discuss the matter. Proposals discussed at the meetings are currently being examined and futher discussions will take place with the INTO.
