Vol. 427 No. 8

Written Answers. - World Court Project.

Trevor Sargent

Question:

125 Mr. Sargent asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Foreign Affairs if, in the light of his meeting with a person (details supplied) on 29 January 1993, Ireland intends to support the World Court Project, whose aim it is to get a ruling from the World Court that nuclear weapons are illegal.

I can confirm that I met a representative of the World Court Project on Thursday 28 January 1993. I was grateful to have the opportunity to obtain first hand information on the World Court Project and on the plans to table a draft resolution on the project at the United Nations later this year.

I informed the representative that Ireland has always taken a strong position in favour of comprehensive nuclear disarmament measures at the United Nations and that the Government were committed to maintaining that policy. I undertook to consider very carefully our position on the draft resolution when the text became available.
