Vol. 428 No. 1

Written Answers. - Garda Recruitment.

Bernard Allen

Question:

192 Mr. Allen asked the Minister for Justice the status of a letter (details supplied) sent by the Civil Service Commission to applicants for recruitment to the Garda; and if persons who received this type of letter are now eliminated for consideration for the Garda.

The Civil Service Commission are responsible for the conduct of competitions for the recruitment of Garda trainees and the Deputy will appreciate that I have no function in the matter.

I am informed by the Civil Service Commissioners that candidates for the Garda Síochána from the 1991 competition are being called to interview strictly in accordance with their placing in the written test.

A number of candidates who passed the written test but were not placed high enough to receive an interview immediately were advised by letter that they were not being called for interview. These letters, however, did not rule out entirely the prospect of an interview eventually, depending on the number of potential trainees becoming available from the scheduled programme of interviews. That programme has now been concluded and at this stage it appears that sufficient potential trainees have been selected.

I am informed that the matter is being monitored by the Garda authorities and the Civil Service Commission and the persons in question will be appraised of their position at an early stage.
