Vol. 428 No. 1

Written Answers. - Inishmore (Galway) Water Supply.

Robert Molloy

Question:

261 Mr. Molloy asked the Minister for the Environment if his attention has been drawn to the urgent need for facilities and other improvements to the public water supply on Inishmore, Aran Islands, County Galway; whether funds will be made available to enable this work to be undertaken in 1993; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I am aware of the water supply problems on Inishmore, and have already made a grant to Galway County Council in relation to temporary measures necessitated during the summer of 1992. Preliminary proposals for a new reservoir have been submitted by Galway County Council to my Department. These proposals do not, however, fully address overall water supply requirements in terms of treatment, sources and distribution; a further report is awaited from the county council on these aspects. In these circumstances, decisions in regard to commencement of work and funding arrangements do not arise at this stage.
